Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Director: Tomas Alfredson

Starring: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy, John Hurt, Toby Jones, Mark Strong

Distributed By: StudioCanal

Release Date: September 2011

---------------------------------------------------------------

This is a very subtle and intelligent espionage thriller.
You have to be really patient with this while the story builds as the first hour is fairly slow paced, but if you bear with it you will be rewarded as this movie is all about the cast and their dialogue.
Gary Oldman is the star of this, but each cast member has an opportunity to shine. I particularly enjoyed the performances by Tom Hardy, Colin Firth and Mark Strong.
The 70's setting is captured perfectly and it has some good moments of humour thrown in.
I would like to read John Le Carré's novel to see how similar this adaptation is to his work.

United 93

Director: Paul Greengrass

Starring: Khalid Abdalla, Christian Clemenson, Cheyenne Jackson, J.J. Johnson, Sarmed al-Samarrai, David Alan Basche

Distributed By: Universal Pictures, United International Pictures, Buena Vista International

Release Date: April 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------

This is a powerfully moving movie.
Told from various viewpoints this film plays out the events that led to United 93 crash landing as a result of the passengers taking a stand against the terrorists on board and became the only hijacked plane that didn't reach its planned destination.
It's tense and unpleasant viewing but it continues to remind us about the tragic events that took place on 9/11 and the heroism of the passengers who gave their lives.

Fish Tank

Director: Andrea Arnold

Starring: Katie Jarvis, Kierston Wareing, Michael Fassbender

Distributed By: IFC Films

Release Date: September 2009

-------------------------------------------------------------

This is a gritty and very realistic portrayal of growing up in underprivileged conditions.
Katie Jarvis is excellent as Mia a very wayward teen; looking for approval and love as she tries to make her dream as a dancer become a reality and Michael Fassbender is very charming as Connor who has a place in both Mia and her mother's life!
Great casting and a realistic setting make this a powerful movie!

Inglourious Basterds

Director: Quentin Tarantino

Starring: Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Michael Fassbender, Eli Roth, Diane Kruger, Daniel Brühl, Mélanie Laurent, Til Schweiger

Distributed By: Universal Pictures

Release Date: August 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------

Another great movie by Tarantino.
I love how the scenes are very understated and suddenly explode to life. The beginning sequence alone in the French farmers house is one of the most impressive pieces of subtle acting that I have ever seen and is wonderfully played by Christoph Waltz and Denis Menochet.
Brad Pitt is excellent and really plays it up and Mélanie Laurent is heartbreakingly good as she brings strength and sympathy to her character.
Diane Kruger and Michael Fassbender are both a joy to watch and Christoph Waltz is scarily good in his portrayal and steals the movie! One of Tarantino's best!

Centurion

Director: Neil Marshall

Starring: Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, Olga Kurylenko, Liam Cunningham

Distributed By: Pathé

Release Date: April 2010

-------------------------------------------------------------

This is great and is a really good take on the Ninth Legion myth.
It has a very British feel to it and the script has an especially British turn of phrase!
Michael Fassbender is an amazing actor and this sort of movie really suits him.
The rest of the cast all do well and I particularly like Imogen Poots who brings a sensitive performance whilst Olga Kurylenko brings fierceness.
It's great to see a female completely kicking ass too! Very impressive!!

Jonah Hex

Director: Jimmy Haywood

Starring: Josh Brolin, John Malkovich, Megan Fox, Michael Fassbender, Will Arnett, Michael Shannon, Aiden Quinn

Distributed By: Warner Bros. Pictures

Release Date: June 2010

--------------------------------------------------------------

This is certainly a unique movie! Based on the comic book of the same name Jonah Hex is out for revenge against the man who killed his family.
Josh Brolin is good as the lead and brings a quietly menacing quality to his character. John Malkovich is typically villainous as Turnbull and Michael Fassbender has lots of fun as his psychotic sidekick!
The movie has good understated effects and non-stop action throughout!
Dark and moody this is a western with a supernatural twist!
